Watching the video posted about the FAU student and her outburst during the middle of her classroom was quite disturbing. This video that was posted shows in so many ways the things that are not only wrong with out school systems in the US, but also our social media and it's effect on race. The video in my eyes not only showed arrogance, but the lack of authority and strong will of the schools staff.
When a strong and powerful situation like that occurs, the staff in the classroom shouldn't wait until the situation escalates to finally take action. As soon as their is a threat being imposed among the students in your classroom you must make sure it doesn't happen, prevent it from happening! My other issue with what took place in this video is that it now portrays more people into thinking most African Americans like myself that we follow in that same path when simply, many of us do not. Watching videos such as these make me feel bad not only for the school, but as myself as a black young man. The video to me has already been shown all over the Internet and will only badly influence the African American community as well. But of course, this is just my opinion.
I found it quite funny to know that MULTIPLE students record the scene as it was going on. Did you notice that the other people that also recorded the video were African-American? Sometimes I feel that the people of our very own race do not see the problems with themselves, and that's quite horrible.
I still think that FAU should use this video to prepare to deal with events like these in the future as we also learn more into the Trayvon Martin case.
When it comes to social media, we must all remember that whatever we post anywhere, represents us no matter where we go. For example, athletes in the sports industry are not allowed to post whatever they feel, or they could be sending a nice check to the NFL soon. I think we all as social media users for our jobs or even our families should have that same ambition, to watch what we post. As a ESPN employee, I am under the same situation, I watch what I post because no matter what, somebody is watching.
Have a good week!

Yes that was unfortunate how everyone started to video tape the scene, but that is just the way that most people are because of the way society is being shaped. It seems that there is not much we can do about it because it is one (you or i) vs. the world, but small things come in large packages. And also you are are correct when you say that we should be mindful of certain videos and messages we allow to go viral specifically because of how many people can view it; it can be dangerous.
ReplyDeleteJust because it was a college class does not mean that the staff should just lay down and let the students rage grow and take over. It was sad seeing students recording it instead of trying to help calm it down. I get its not there place too, but its a room full of adults and I feel it could of been stopped sooner than it should of.
